IS CHEMICAL ALOPECIA THE CAUSE OF SHEDDING IN AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN?

I have been a hair stylist for 22 years and something I’m noticing is that more cases of chemical Alopecia are rising in african american women.Chemical Alopecia is caused by unprofessional use of chemicals by uniformed operators. Unless you see a licensed professional the consequences caused by relaxers and color could be devastating, like root damage, hair breakage or total hair loss.

Chemical Alopecia can also occur from high PH alkaline in high volume peroxide used to mix bleach with, in order to “lift” hair color to a lighter shade. The only way to know for sure if your experiencing hair loss due to alopecia is to see a dermatologist. Your Doctor will do a test on your scalp to find out what form of alopecia if any, has your hair shedding.SometimesYour hair loss can come from something as simple as being iron deficient.

If you are diagnosed with some form of Alopecia, you have solutions available to you! One of my clients came to me because she had been experiencing permanent hair loss in the crown of her head, to solve the problem I gave her hair extensions in the top of her head inspired by the “toupe” and razor cut it to blend in with the rest of her hair. You still can look and feel like yourself!

Talk to your stylist! He or she will help you figure out the best option for your lifestyle.
